Family-Owned Café Little Red Hen Impresses With Hearty Comfort Food

Established in 1972 by Rena Shay (and currently run by owner-chef Barbara Shay), this family-owned café specializes in comfort foods and hearty breakfasts. A beloved staple in the community, this no-frills, classic diner exudes homey charm and genuine warmth.

The offerings aren’t fancy by any means, but the homemade meals will hit the spot for both your stomach and soul—and you certainly won’t leave hungry. Popular menu picks include steak and eggs, shrimp and grits, and a decadent blueberry French toast that’s thickly battered and fried, resulting in a deliciously rich golden crust, topped with a smattering of powdered sugar.

In 2019, Little Red Hen/the Shay family received much-deserved recognition for their long-standing community impact and service in the form of the Small Business Award, presented during the Pasadena NAACP’s 34th Ruby McKnight Williams Awards dinner.
