Our Readers Share Their Favorite Take-Out Spots in Pasadena

Daddy's Chicken Shack

For many of us during the lockdown, food took on even more significance than normal. Grocery shopping was suddenly a big event. Something to look forward to, to relieve the monotony. Going out for supplies took additional planning…and space as we were suddenly responsible for making three meals a day, requiring most of us to keep considerably more food on hand than usual. There were positives in all this—for instance, I, like countless other neophytes, can now bake bread (sort of)…and make pickles. Of course, we are social beings and need more than the comfort of warm bread.

Fortunately, at least regarding the tedium of our own cooking, some relief was available. Pasadena didn’t suddenly abdicate its status as a true restaurant town just because social distancing made in-person dining impossible. On the contrary, the Pasadena restaurant community stepped up in a big way with retooled procedures and often modified menus and hours that made it possible to continue serving the community on a to-go basis. As part of our conversations with local residents about what they loved and missed most about Pasadena while sheltering at home, dining out with friends and family was part of nearly every conversation. Naturally, we were curious where everyone was getting their take-out. It turns out, just about everywhere.
