While Pablo Picasso is arguably one of the most notable names in art for his exploration into Cubism and experimentation with various mediums, the Norton Simon Museum’s new exhibit features the multi-faceted artist’s venture into lithography and gives visitors a special glimpse into the boundary-breaking mind of Picasso.
Norton Simon Associate Curator Emily Beeny notes, “Norton Simon seems to have been particularly drawn to Picasso, acquiring more works by him than by any other artist except Goya. I think one reason why Picasso’s work appealed to Mr. Simon—and appeals to us still—is that he was such a protean artist, always trying something new; he continued to change and evolve right up to the end.”
The exhibit showcases over 80 prints that demonstrate Picasso’s experimentation in lithography, while capturing his subjects in varying stages, from rough outlines to more technically precise lifelike forms. “He turned to the medium in a newly concerted and experimental way,” explains Beeny. “The exhibition opens up the Norton Simon’s unique trove of multi-state lithographs, presenting many compositions in every recorded state. Many of these objects haven’t been on view in decades. [The exhibit] presents familiar, iconic prints but also includes many seldom-seen works. The goal is to emphasize the experimental nature of Picasso’s lithographic project—his exploration and interrogation of the medium.”
