Sand Therapy: An Ancient Wellness Practice That Heals and Relaxes the Body

Psammotherapy (hot sand therapy) dates back thousands of years to ancient Egypt, where it was used to treat inflammatory diseases and ailments such as scoliosis. Modern spas have revived the practice and are offering quartz sand table massage treatments to their clients.

Desuar Spa in Los Angeles has the multifunctional “equilibrium table,” which serves as a water bed and Himalayan salt bed, as well as a quartz sand table. Its patented heating system is easily adjustable, fast, and safe. The temperature reached by the heating membrane creates a dry environment that prevents the formation of molds and bacteria, maintaining constant sanitation.

“A massage on a bed with quartz sand has amazing benefits,” says Desuar Spa owner Deisy Suarez. “The small grains of quartz sand perform a constant micromassage and the sand contours to the shape of the body, creating a warming cocoon effect while also creating a comfortable resting place with the best distribution of body weight. The temperature of the sand relaxes muscles and nervous tension, preparing the body perfectly for its massage treatment.”

Suarez recommends scheduling a massage treatment monthly for minor aches and pains. She says clients struggling with severe pain and injury may benefit from two to four treatments per month, with sessions lasting between 50 and 80 minutes.

“The warm quartz sand holds heat and acts as a cleanser, disinfectant, and alkalizing element while relaxing the muscles, bones, and joints,” Suarez explains. “It has the ability to bring the body to complete relaxation in a variety of ways.”
